Job Description : Scientific Coordinator - Identification of Tree Species and Geographic Origin. Under the supervision of the Global Coordinator, Conservation and Sustainable Use of Forest and other Wild Plant Resources, and based at Bioversity’s Regional Office for Asia, Pacific and Oceania (APO), Serdang, Malaysia, the Scientific Coordinator will coordinate research, information management and development of international standards for use of DNA markers and stable isotopes to identify timber species and origin. In particular, the incumbent will: - Create and maintain a network of experts and institutes that have research and/or implementing activities in the fields of: o Identifying origin of timber with DNA-based methods; o Identifying origin of timber with stable isotopes; o Identifying endangered timber species (DNA based methods, wood anatomical identification); o Phylogeographic studies of timber species. By: a) Information exchange, running a web-page, editing newsletters, making common publications; b) Catalysing and leading the development of common research activities. - Develop internationally accepted and agreed upon guidelines for sampling design, methods, sample storage, and documentation, DNA extraction, genotyping, stable isotopes analysis and data analysis. - Organise ring and blind tests at involved labs for DNA-based methods and stable isotopes. - Develop and set up an internationally accepted accreditation system for labs that want to work in this area. - Organise and oversee storage and distribution of standard material. - Coordinate the development and maintenance of an online data base with geo-referenced data on genetic structure and stable isotopes of timber tree species. - Develop and implement an internationally accepted agreement for data input and use of the online data base. - Liaise with producers and consumers of traded timber species listed as well as collaborate with private sector initiatives against illegal logging and international organisations acting in this field, like ITTO, CITES, FAO. - Develop and lead related fundraising activities including liaison with donors and leading development of international research proposals in this area. - Organise workshops with broad participation of the network experts for all activities that need international acceptance and agreement, including an inception workshop. - Organise the meetings of the Steering Committee. - Report on outcomes and planned activities at the Steering Committee meetings. - Contribute to Bioversity’s overall planning processes and to cooperation with the Malaysian Forest Research Institute (FRIM) or to training of local forest project staff.
 
Minimum Qualification & Experience : - A PhD in a relevant field (forest science, forest genetics, wood biology or wood chemistry, natural resource management), or other academic qualifications and experience that are equivalent. - Minimum of 5 years professional experience including research management and field experience. - Excellent command of the English language, both written and spoken. - Excellent writing skills. - Competence in the use of relevant software tools, including Excel database functions or similar software. - Sustained record of fund-raising and publications. Desirable competencies and qualifications: - Knowledge of certification including chain of custody and experience with a certifying body; - Knowledge of other international languages.
 
Skills & abilities : - Superior interpersonal and communications skills including effective advocacy, facilitation, networking, consensus building skills, and an ability to interact effectively with a wide range of collaborators from different cultural backgrounds. - Proven expertise in project proposal development and collaborative research management. - Good understanding of the current state, and vision of the future state of knowledge about international instruments to control and reduce illegal logging. - Demonstrated experience in both research and development fields, and with the relevant genetic and stable isotopes technologies.

Terms & Conditions : This is a Scientist internationally recruited position. Bioversity International offers an attractive remuneration package including a competitive salary, non-contributory retirement plan, medical insurance, housing allowance and leave provisions. All benefits are denominated and paid in US Dollars. The initial contract will be for a period of three years subject to a probationary period of one year.
